Did you know that salt is one of the things you should never add to baby food (before 1 year old)?
During infancy, your baby’s organs — especially the kidneys — are still developing.
The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste and regulating minerals.
Too much sodium can overload the kidneys and may affect long-term health.
Why shouldn’t babies eat salt?
Even a tiny pinch contains more sodium than your baby needs.
Babies under 1 year old require only around 400 mg of sodium per day
(about 1/6 teaspoon of salt!)
Meanwhile, age-appropriate foods such as meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, and grains already contain naturally occurring minerals — including iodine.
Both breast milk and infant formula also have the right amount of sodium built into their nutritional composition.
There is absolutely no need to add more.
